Who We Are
Global Presence
At Koolah Creek we breed purebred Highland cattle for stud, show, and companions. We are registered breeders with the Australian Highland Cattle Society, and are dedicated to preserving the heritage of this incredible breed. We place a strong emphasis on exceptionally docile temperaments and sound structure in our stud breeding program – we aim to breed the kind of cattle that we enjoy working with and are a pleasure to handle. The welfare of our animals is at the centre of everything we do; we care immensely for all of our cattle.
When you choose cattle from Koolah Creek, you’re investing in our passion for Highlands, our commitment to gold-standard animal welfare, and our dedication to quality & excellence. We couldn’t be happier to share our experience and offer guidance, advice, and answer any questions. We would love to assist you on your Highland cattle journey – please don’t hesitate to get in touch, we are here to help every step of the way!
Highlands are the ideal answer to the demand for quiet, manageable cattle for small properties and first-time cattle owners. Quiet cattle are easy to handle and care for – every calf we sell has extensive handling & training after being gently weaned, to ensure they are a joy to handle, and easy to care for. Our cattle are born and bred on the NSW Mid North Coast, so they are well adapted to our warm and humid coastal climate.et mauris.
Our cows of Purebred (P) or Fully Imported Bloodline (FIB) registration produce our stud stock. Their progeny are sold registered, and can be entered in shows. Stud heifer & bull calves are only available to AHCS registered breeders.
Our graded females form the basis of our pet program, and the best heifer progeny are retained for grading up to our stud program.
Our Story
A miniature Highland cow is a smaller version of a standard Highland cow, usually weighing between 500 and 700 pounds and standing 36 to 48 inches tall. They are known for their shaggy coats and long horns.
Miniature Highland cows are docile, hardy, and can be good companions, show cattle, or home-raised beef. They require less feed and land than standard Highland cows, and can be raised on a pasture as small as half an acre.
However, some say that there is no such thing as a miniature Highland cow, and that many animals marketed as such are actually stunted or poor examples of the breed. This is because there are many reasons why a calf may be small, including:
Placental insufficiency
The dam’s declining milk production or quality
The calf was sick
A congenital condition, such as a bad heart
The breeding combination
The breeder deliberately withheld nutrition
The breeder misrepresented the age of the animal
Most miniature Highland cows carry a gene linked to a growth disorder called chondrodysplasia, which can cause dwarfism. If both the sire and the dam carry the gene, it can be lethal
Our Breeding Program
Our stud cattle are all registered with the Australian Highland Cattle Society (AHCS). Our member number is 1394.
We have two concurrent breeding programs – our stud program and our pet program. We are more than happy to discuss bloodlines and the differences between the registration grades, to help you choose the best option for you. We place a strong emphasis on selecting for exceptional quiet temperament – perfect for hobby farmers or those new to owning cattle.
